Paintless Dent Repair

A door ding or shallow dent does not always require repainting. For suitable damage, paintless dent repair reshapes the panel while preserving its existing painted finish.

Preserve What Is Already There

A focused approach to suitable dents.

When the damage allows it, PDR can address a dent without introducing new paint to the repair area. The first step is determining whether the panel can respond to this method.

Parking lot door dings

Small depressions from contact with another vehicle’s door may be candidates when the finish remains intact and the panel can be accessed appropriately.

Selected hail dents

Some hail damage can be repaired with PDR. Dent quantity, depth, location, and paint condition help determine the scope and whether other repair methods are needed.

Shallow panel dents

A broader, shallow dent may be suitable even when it looks noticeable. Size alone does not determine repairability; metal stretching and dent shape also matter.

The Suitability Check

Can your dent be repaired without paint?

Two dents of similar size can require different repairs. An assessment considers the entire damaged area rather than relying on diameter alone.

Photos help start the conversation. An in-person inspection may still be needed to evaluate paint condition, panel access, and the shape of the damage.

  • Paint condition: Cracking, chipping, or a compromised finish may mean refinishing is required.
  • Dent depth and shape: Sharp creases and heavily stretched metal can limit what PDR can achieve.
  • Panel location: Edges, body lines, internal reinforcements, and tool access influence the repair approach.
  • Material and repair history: Panel construction and previous bodywork or repainting can affect method selection and repair risk.
From Inspection to Finish

How a paintless dent repair is approached.

  1. Assess the damage

Inspect the dent and surrounding finish, review panel access, and determine whether PDR is an appropriate option.

  2. Reshape the panel

Use suitable tools and controlled movements to work the damaged metal toward its original contour.

  3. Review the result

Examine the repaired area using lighting and viewing angles that help reveal remaining surface irregularities.

Your PDR Questions

Clear expectations for dent removal.

Does paintless dent repair use filler or new paint?

A completed paintless repair reshapes the panel without conventional body filler and repainting. If the damage requires those steps, it becomes a conventional or combined repair rather than a fully paintless repair.

Can paintless dent repair fix a dent on a body line?

Some body-line dents can be repaired with PDR. The sharpness of the damage, metal stretching, paint condition, and access determine whether this is practical and what result is achievable.

Can PDR repair scratches or chipped paint?

PDR addresses the shape of the metal; it does not replace missing paint or remove every scratch. Damage to the finish may require a separate paint repair.

Is paintless dent repair cheaper than conventional repair?

It can cost less for suitable dents because painting may be avoided. Pricing still depends on damage complexity, panel access, dent quantity, and any required disassembly.

How long does paintless dent repair take?

A small accessible dent may require less work than multiple hail dents or damage behind reinforcement. Timing is best established after the repair area has been assessed.

Will a dent come back after PDR?

Properly reshaped metal should not simply return to the damaged shape during normal use. A new impact or an underlying issue can cause new deformation.

What if my vehicle is not a candidate for PDR?

Conventional dent repair and refinishing may be appropriate. The recommended method should address both the panel damage and the condition of the painted surface.
