Automotive Scratch Repair
From a light surface mark to a scratch through the color, the right repair begins with understanding how deeply the finish has been damaged. We assess the affected area to determine whether correction or refinishing is appropriate.
Request a Scratch Repair EstimateCan a car scratch be polished out?
Some shallow marks in a suitable gloss clearcoat can be reduced or removed through controlled polishing. Scratches that extend through the clearcoat into the color, primer, or underlying material generally require a different repair.
Polishing removes a small amount of the surrounding coating. The remaining finish, previous repairs, and coating type must be considered before deciding how much correction is appropriate.
What looks like a scratch may tell a different story.
Appearance alone does not establish the repair method. Cleaning and inspection help distinguish material sitting on the finish from damage cutting into it.
Paint transfer and scuffs
Contact with another object can leave foreign material on the paint. Careful removal may improve the appearance, but scratches or dents can remain underneath.
Light clearcoat scratches
Fine scratches and some surface marks may respond to paint correction when coating condition and thickness allow it. Not every mark can be safely polished away.
Deep scratches and gouges
Missing color, exposed primer, or damage reaching the panel material may require preparation and refinishing to restore the damaged coating.
Address the scratch without overlooking the finish.
A long key scratch, a parking scrape, and a light wash mark can require very different work. Panel edges, body lines, specialty finishes, and earlier paint repairs also influence the options.
Matte and satin finishes need special consideration. Conventional polishing can change their appearance. The repair must follow the requirements for the specific finish.
Clean and inspect
Evaluate the affected surface, distinguish transfer from coating damage, and look for dents or other related issues.
Determine the repair scope
Decide whether suitable surface correction, paint repair, or more extensive panel work is needed.
Correct or refinish
Perform the appropriate work. Areas requiring paint are prepared and refinished using the selected coating system.
Review the appearance
Inspect the repaired surface for remaining marks, color transition, and finish consistency.
A deep scratch can involve more than a thin line.
Refinishing requires room to prepare the damaged coating and apply the specified products. A narrow scratch does not necessarily mean the finished repair can be limited to that exact line.
Depending on the color and damage location, the work may include a larger refinishing area or color blending into an adjacent panel.

How much does automotive scratch repair cost?
Cost depends on scratch depth, length, location, panel condition, and whether painting is required. A surface scuff and a scratch through the color can involve very different labor and materials.
Can you repair a scratch caused by a key?
Key scratches can be assessed for repair. If the damage cuts through the clearcoat or color, refinishing may be needed. Multiple affected panels can increase the scope.
Does a scratch that catches a fingernail always need paint?
The fingernail check is only a rough observation. It does not reliably establish the damaged layer or whether polishing is appropriate. Inspection is needed before choosing the repair method.
Will touch-up paint make the scratch disappear?
Touch-up paint can cover a small exposed area, but it may leave a visible difference in texture, level, or color. It generally does not produce the same appearance as properly prepared panel refinishing.
Can scratches cause rust?
A scratch that exposes corrosion-prone metal can allow corrosion to develop. Scratches in plastic panels do not cause the plastic itself to rust, although damaged coatings may still need repair.
Can you repair scratches on a plastic bumper?
Many painted bumper scratches can be repaired. Gouges, cracks, deformation, and damage near sensors may require additional evaluation. The bumper material and vehicle repair requirements guide the approach.
What should I send for a scratch repair estimate?
Include your vehicle’s year, make, and model, a close photo of the scratch, and a wider photo showing its position on the panel. Mention any dents, exposed material, or previous paintwork you know about.
