The Collision Repair Shop Jeep History
When the United States was going to become involved in the war raging in Europe, the U.S. Army contacted over a hundred companies asking for working prototypes of a four-wheel-drive reconnaissance car. Just two companies responded to the request, which were The American Bantam Car Company and Willys-Overland. The Army set what an impossible deadline of 49 days to supply a working prototype. When Willys tried getting more time the army refused. The American Bantam Car Company that was bankrupt had no engineering staff left on the payroll. Karl Probst who was a talented freelance designer from Detroit, responded to the Army's request and commenced work. He started out without salary, on July 17, 1940. Probst made full plans for the Bantam prototype, which were called the Bantam Reconnaissance Car. Those plans were done in two days, working up a cost estimate the next. In July, Bantam's bid was submitted with blueprints. Most of the vehicle was able to be assembled from off-the-shelf automotive parts, custom four-wheel drivetrain components were to be supplied by Spicer. The prototype was completed in Butler, Pennsylvania then driven to Camp Holabird, Maryland, for Army testing in September.
